Typewreader, 2018

Smith-Corona typewriter bezel, 16mm projector case, potentiometers, Arduino
12.25 x 18 x 4.75 inches

This found object kinetic sculpture allows users to explore four messages as they appear on a qwerty keyboard. The user controls of the speed of the message in order to train their eyes and brain to recognize a layout that has become second nature to our hands. I was anxious to discover how readily eyes could pick up or read a Qwerty message. For many, the keyboard is almost hardwired through our hands – yet it takes laborious mental mapping to try to get the eyes to become familiar with what other parts of the body, or brain, know.
