Optic Encoder Octopus (Tube-Head Cephalopod), 2024

Found objects (vintage camera, machine and electro-mechanical parts, small light bulbs), pressure-cast urethane resin, custom brackets, custom designed frame (mdf, aluminum, acrylic, stainless and nylon hardware).

Framed: 15 x 3.75 in (38.1 x 9.53 cm)
Cast: 9.78 x 2 in (24.84 x 5.08 cm)
Weight: 11.075lb

This bold cephalopod contains many capacitors of various shapes and sizes, camera parts, watch parts, and a number of light bulbs (7 different bulbs, 2 of which are hidden). The very top of the head is the top of an automotive light. The numbered ring was a digit display from an old mechanical calculator. The webbing is composed of many orange, monolithic ceramic capacitors, all trimmed, bent, and tacked with glue. The silver tips at the end of each arm are some type of circuit board stand-off or rivet, possibly for soldering wires to. This is the thickest (2") cast to date for this ten-inch diameter format.

• The round frame consists of several layers of MDF topped with acrylic and aluminum trim. The white MDF panel has a slight circular or radial texture in white stain. I designed the frame and provide file to a manufacturer that laser/router cuts the pieces. Lex counter-sinks, sands, seals, stains, and assembles each frame.
• The four custom brackets were designed by Lex, cut by the same third party, then finished and assembled by Lex.
• Embossed signature label on bottom of cast.
• Certificate of Authenticity included.
• There may be slight surface imperfections on all casts including small surface bubbles or curved edges. Anything overtly noticeable will be noted above.
• The cast creature is susceptible to fingerprints, clean with a small amount of window cleaner and a soft cloth.
• Keep out of direct sunlight or high-emitting UV lights.
• Avoid extreme temperatures and rapid temperature variations.
